Out Now! This beautifully crafted graphic novel by Tom Hammock and Megan Hutchinson. A brilliant Southern Gothic tale of the paranormal that centres on Hoodoo. Set in the swamps of Louisiana, this is a dark, creepy ghost story that will have you hooked from the beginning.
After her parents’ accidental death by mushroom poisoning, young Aurora Grimeon is sent to live with her estranged grandfather on Ossuary Isle, deep in the southern swamps. Joined by her grandfather’s pet raccoon Missy, Aurora explores the fog-covered island of graves. Along the way she meets its sinister residents who care for the tombstones and mausoleums, living out their lives by the strange rules of Hoodoo magic. When ghostly things start happening out in the swamp and island residents start disappearing, Aurora thrusts herself into the middle of the mystery, uncovering secrets that might be better left buried.
An Aurora Grimeon Story: Will O’ the Wisp explores the spooky world of a cemetery island in the southern swamps that time has passed by, its creepy cast of characters, and an old biological supply company; all through the eyes of a teenage girl. Along the way she discovers Hoodoo (a uniquely American magical practice), and delves deeply into it when mysterious happenings out in the swamp begin to threaten those on the island. The story features many authentic Hoodoo practices. This is the first self-contained story featuring Aurora and her pet raccoon Missy solving mysteries steeped in southern ghost stories.
The concept behind the design of the physical book was to construct a book which would have been at home in Silver’s ancient library on Ossuary Isle. The kind of hand-crafted book your grandparents got from their parents and smelled great to open. This hard-cover book features a cover with a leather texture, embossing, gold foil and marbled end papers. The spine is designed mimicking book design from the 1800’s. And last, but not least, the book has a beautifully detailed Art Deco clasp keeping it closed.

I grew up in Northern California where my father studies venoms, insects and other odd creatures. As such, most family vacations were spent in the wilderness, often hunting for previously said creatures and their venoms. I’ve lived a number of places around the world including, but not limited to Australia (home of many venomous creatures) and England (home of not so many venomous creatures). I studied landscape architecture at UC Berkeley. This led to studying Film design at the American Film Institute and a lot of subsequent work filming things. Among the things which have not been filmed are two younger siblings; a sister who solves quite involved math problems and a brother who studies the insects that live in streams. Neither they nor I have a pet raccoon, but if we did it would be like Missy. Presently I live in Hollywood where I drink tea and design films when I’m not writing graphic novels. You might have heard of some of the films I’ve designed, including You’re Next, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, and V/H/S 2. An Aurora Grimeon Story: Will O’ the Wisp is my first graphic novel. I don’t eat mushrooms I can’t identify.
Megan always knew that she would have to be an artist in order to be happy in this world. This led her to attend UCLA as a Design | Media Art Major where she was trained to graphically construct her creative ideas. Following her graduation, she attended the American Film Institute as a Production Design fellow. Her continued work in cinema allows her to explore narrative storytelling, as well as create and build sets, props, costumes and other unworldly things, all of which are very artsy indeed. Her various work amalgamates into a happy balance of Fine art, graphic design and narrative structure which manifests itself in her illustrative work. Currently she is illustrating creating custom illustrations for clients, constructing short stories for various anthologies, showing pieces at art shows around the Los Angeles area and can be spotted occasionally at a drink and draw with her fellow comic book geeks.
